To all the Midwives!
Monday, May 5, 2008 at 02:11PM Happy International Midwives Day!
To all the amazing midwives who work so hard so ensure that women have the choice and availability of safe gentle home or birth center births!
To the midwives who welcome babies into this world with soft hands and a warm home!
To all the midwives, midwifery students, birth educators, birth assistants, birth activists, and moms and dads who work tirelessly to promote and educate the public about the availability, importance, and value of midwifery care!
To all our ancestor midwives who carried this tradition of midwifery through many cultures, generations, and through waves of oppression from witchhunts and patriarchy to bring this honorable women's work to us today!
To all who are midwifing the future of a peaceful humanity through facilitating conscious birth!
To all the midwives - Thank you! We love you!

Pushed Birth is Blogging
Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 12:12AM Pushed Birth is the new sister site for Pushed, the book written by Jennifer Block. A sassy birth blog with articles about pop culture, current events, midwifery rights, and birth activism, this website is also a vehicle for important information for birthing women and families today navigating the modern maternity care system.
According to a 2006 survey, a mere 2% of women had an optimal birth experience. Instead, most women experience a host of routine medical interventions. Research shows that what a woman needs most in labor is support.
Pushed Birth Blog answers women's questions: What is a pushed birth? Can I avoid it? What about drugs? What about previous cesarean sections? What about my vagina? Why not schedule it?
The underlying message is trust your body, be proactive in creating your optimal birth experience, have good support, and be educated. A recent post refers to an Australian study that shows that women who request surgical births are fearful of vaginal birth because of misinformation and lack of education about normal birth. They inaccurately believe surgical birth is safer than vaginal birth, because of misinformation on the dangers of surgery for mothers and babies and the negative effects upon breastfeeding, bonding, infant health, and future pregnancies.
We need more empowered mamas and less interference with technology in birth. Unless your not in labor, and that technology is the computer, and your blogging about empowered birthing...conscious use of information technology can actually change the tides of birth globally through education. I'm glad we have a new birth blogger weaving the web of change.
